Approach, Methods, and Technic

http://chasyacip.blogspot.com/2009/11/guru-yang-sedang-mengajar-anak-didiknya.html
In the last session, we talked about some approach to teach language for students. There is lecture discussion model, direct instruction model, group instruction model, and guided discovery. Traditionally, I know that I can choose one of them to teach my students, it’s like Maxwell and Meiser (2001) assumed in Goh’s book that as a teacher should have appropriate way to teach language for students to provide facilitate learning. As we know, every approach has various methods and technique which different advantages and disadvantages.
I have gotten that advantages and disadvantage for each other based on our discussion in the last session. First, lecture discussion model is suitable for students who want to speak English fluency and it is simple to implementation for teacher. However, it will make the students to feel overload, because the methods which is used just question-answer. A second, direct instruction model is an approach which stresses the teachers to be guide for their students, and the process is introduction, presentation (lecturing), guide practice (the students given some activity), and independent practice (homework, assignment, etc). A third, group instruction model is way which make easy to grab the students and it will create the students as active learner. The students can share with each other. Forth, guided discovery is one of students center learning approach, so the teacher as a guide and a facilitator. However, students will learn out of topic if teachers do not become a good guide.
Actually, I still confuse that can I combine each methods to teach language learning or not? Because I assume if the combination is better than the method stands alone. On the other hand, I got an interesting statement based on our last discussion that the differences between direct instruction model and guided discovery is about time allocation, guided instruction model use almost of all learning time just for students activity and discussion, but direct instruction model is vice versa, it means that the teacher handle almost of learning time in the classroom.
