It Is Time for Teaching

School experience program has come again. This time I go to SMAN 61 Jakarta. It is different from previous school experience because this time my friends and I do not only observe but also do teaching assistant. It is challenging because it is the first time I must face my real student. Fortunately, last session of PETA my friends and I have done the micro-teaching, so at least I know what I have to do in teaching assistant.

At the first time I came to SMAN 61 Jakarta I was accompanied by my lecturer, Mr. Rinaldi. We did the introduction between SSE students and the school. Then we were divided into group because we worked in group in doing the teaching assistant. My team and I went to English class only. The master teacher was Mrs. Laila. We had discussion about teaching assistant itself. We decided to separate it. On the first two days of English class we would only do the observation and do the teaching assistant on the rest.

Mrs. Laila was so excited in teaching. She always used English and refuse student who asked her in Bahasa Indonesia, so students were forced to speak English. I think that was good to practice students’ speaking skill. Mostly Mrs. Laila used lecture discussion model in teaching English. She often gave students some question about the material especially when they did the practice. For example, in listening session Mrs. Laila asked the students about what the dialog tell about. Then they were having discussion about it. I think that is good to make students pay attention to the lesson because they have to be ready if the teacher asks them.

In SMAN 61 Jakarta, they often use language laboratory for teaching English. They said that the government ask the school to use Dynamic Net software for teaching English. Then it become a mandatory.  Students will be asked to go to language lab for English subject. I think it was not really effective because mostly the students become busy with their selves and the software. Then it was hard for teacher to achieve the learning objectives. Even Mrs. Laila said that she did not really like that instruction from government. It made her to work extra because she had to adjust the software and the material in order to achieve the learning objectives.

I am not done with teaching assistant yet because my team and I are going to do that on Friday, but I have observed the master teacher. I am sure I can handle teaching assistant. I am going to apply the knowledge about effective teaching that I have learnt in PETA and LTM (Language Teaching Methodologies) course. I hope I can do it well.
