Last Tuesday on Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA) lesson, our lecturer Ms. Ine divided us into groups and gave us some topic to learn with group. My group got a topic about “Integrating Learning Style and Multiple Intelligences”. This topic discuss about integrating two great theories about learning style and multiple intelligence.
Learning styles emphasize on the different ways people think and feel as they solve problems, create products, and interact. Multiple intelligences theory is about an effort to understand how cultures and disciplines shape human potential. In other words, learning styles concerned about with differences in the process of learning, and multiple intelligences center on the content and product of learning. We learned about this topic because integration of learning styles and multiple intelligences could bring some positive effects such as minimize students’ respective limitation and enhance their strengths.
Learning-styles theorists interpret in various ways of personality, but commonly all of the models have two things that related each other. There are: focus on process which is students concern themselves with the process of learning like how individuals absorb the information. The second thing is emphasis on personality which believes that learning is the result of a personal, individualized act of thought and feeling.
In this topic we also learned that there were four basic styles that commonly people use as their learning style. There are: The mastery style of learner, which explain that people with this kind of style prefer to learn step-by-step, concretely in absorb of information, processes information sequentially and judges the value of learning in terms of its clarity and practicality. This people will learn in detail until they really mastery the lesson. The understanding style learner is the second style which people with this style focuses more in ideas and abstractions. They learn through a process like reasoning, questioning, and testing to look for the evidence about information that they learned. The self-expressive style learner is a style that uses feeling and emotions to construct new ideas and products. The interpersonal style learner is a style that has similarities with the mastery learner. The different is if the mastery learner just learns for themselves, the interpersonal learner prefers to learn socially to help others.
Multiple intelligences is another theory that proposed by Howard Gardner. He said that every people have seven intelligences on themselves. It is just the matter of which intelligence that more dominant than the other. The question is what does it means by kinesthetic intelligence in an interpersonal style learner?
People who has the same intelligence does not mean that they have the same style learning because one of the limitation of learning style is cannot use in different content areas and disciplines. For example Tiger woods (a golf player) is an understanding style learner and Gene Kelly (a dancer) is an self-expressive style learner. These two people have the same intelligence but they are different in learning style.
Grant Wiggins said that as a teacher we cannot use every teaching method nor every form of assessment because even we knew about our students intelligences, it does not mean that they have the same learning style. So we have to use variety of teaching method.
