Be effective, dear Teachy :D

PETA : 1st Journal

Last Tuesday, on September 19th, was my first time attending Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment class (PETA). In a glance, I thought that it would be all about how to teach effectively and how to make an effective assessment. Fortunately, my guess was not false. On the first meeting, my PETA lecturer, Bu Ine, gave me and my classmates a brief description about this course. Trying to be honest, all the explanation about assignments and assessments made me a little bit shock (as usual), but I believe I can make it (as always), aamiin. :)

During the meeting, Bu Ine told us about effective and ineffective teacher and teaching. After that she asked the class to have a flashback about our previous study. She also asked us to tell her about our great teacher and awful teacher. As soon as she asked us, my mind just flew directly into my high school time. It was not that beautiful nor awful, and yes, I do not only have a lot of favorite or wonderful teachers, I have an "unwanted" teacher as well.

My favorite teachers in my high school could successfully make not only me but all of my classmates understand the subject clearly. I take my Physics teacher, Mr. Amen as one of the examples. He taught the class greatly. He successfully made all of us change our mind about Physics as a "killing machine subject". We could enjoy the 90 minutes class without trying to look at the clock and hope the time to move quickly. He magically made us feel the time flies faster. He encouraged all the students by his attitude and sayings. It was rare for him or even never to make his students feel incapable in Physics. I miss him and the way he taught us.

On the contrary, there was also the "unwanted" one. His attitude and sayings made me, personally, feel bad about myself. I felt invisible every time I attended his class. The clock also moved soooooooooo slow. I remember that I looked at the clock every 5 minutes and really wanted to go out from the class soon. I felt bad about him and myself.

From my flashback, I realized something. Maybe Mr. Amen is one of the examples of effective teacher and the other one as the ineffective teacher. They affected me indirectly, inspired me with their different style of teaching. I do want to be a teacher like Mr. Amen and try my best not to be an ineffective teacher. I hope learning PETA can help me to build myself to be an effective teacher who can make me and my students really enjoy the learning process.

"ra, I think you are a "bulu" baby but in fact you have past moments, so you are not a baby again right? (just kidding). this is a good reflection. but, though the "unwanted" teacher is really bad, he has taught us to not to be like him in the future. at least he has taught something to us, ra.."

I agree with youu ;)
I also have some teachers like that.. hope later we're not gonna be like them :D

Being effective is sometimes not easy, many situation may take place out of our control.. but somehow it's our job to make it effective still.
