3rd PETA Reflection: Models of Instruction

On the third session of PETA course, Miss Ine taught us about models of instruction. There are direct instruction, lecture discussion, guided discovery, and group interaction. Those models have different characteristic which and all of those can be applied in the classroom, depends on what objectives you aim.
In direct instruction, teacher’s role is become a model and instruction provider. It is effective to teach concepts and procedural skills. Teacher has control in classroom but not as an authoritarian. Students also do assignment both with teacher’s guidance and independently.
Lecture-discussion is a balance model between lecturing and discussion in the classroom. Teacher gives a brief explanation in lecturing way then asks students to discuss it, usually in group discussion. This model is effective to make students develop their prior knowledge through discussion.
The third model is guided discovery. In this model, teacher performs as a facilitator who gives stimulus usually through open-ended questions. It is interesting because the students can ‘explore and explode’ their thought freely. This model is effective to make students creative and able to link their thought to real-life situation.
The last model is group interaction. Based on Vygotsky’s socio theory, this model focuses in group work and discussion. Teacher only act as a controller and also facilitator. It is effective to build a good teamwork amongst students and increase their interpersonal intelligence.
Frankly, I have never imagined that there are different models to teach like those before. I think I am still far away to be a good teacher. However, I will never give up and keep my hopes up high with the helps from my lecturer and my pals. I cannot walk alone, fella.
