Break Down the Confusion

1st Group Reflection for PETA on 4 Models of Instruction
Today, 7th October 2011 we (Ayu, Chintia, Weni and Jajang) have had a discussion about material from the previous PETA session. We started our discussion with a brainstorming on four models of instruction we have learned. From that brainstorming we realize that we have same perception on some topics and we have different perception on some other topics too. We argued and rebated each other until we get same understanding. Here our discussion’s result:
1.      Direct Instruction
Based on our understanding, direct instruction is TCL (Teacher Centered Learning) model. It’s because the teacher take a big role in the class, so the teacher become authoritative. Then, the instruction comes directly from the teacher. This model use scaffolding in learning process.
2.      Lecture- Discussion
In our opinion in lecture discussion model the teacher combine passive students and active students. The teacher gave brief explanation and monitoring comprehension in learning process. In monitoring comprehension, the teacher gave some questions to the students. The goal is to train student’s long term memory. This model is flexible and appropriate for a new teacher.
3.      Guide Discovery
Well it’s pretty hard to distinction guide discovery and two models above. Based our hot brain storming, we conclude that in this model teacher has main role as a facilitator and let the students to explore the material by them self. Teacher just provided assistant if needed. Teacher also asking open-ended questions in order to enhance students’ curiosity while in lecture discussion commonly teacher asking close-ended questions.
4.      Group Interaction
This model, just like student centered learning (SCL). But as a teacher candidates we have to anticipate unexpected situations if we use this model. The challenges are commonly like chit-chat, students did not explore their understanding and the important things also that one person can influences other member.
Although we have had those understanding actually we still confuse about some things and keep asking about some questions, there are:
1.      Is in Direct Model the learning process focus on teacher only (TCL)?
2.      Is in Lecture- Discussion Model the questions from teacher only remain at LOTS (Lower other thinking skill) stage?
3.      What is the different between teacher role in Group Discovery and Group Interaction model?
Hopefully along with this course we can get better understanding and get the answer for all questions above. We also hope we could get a feedback for those questions from other classmate.
