The third Reflective Journal PETA

            Become a teacher is not easy like we imagine that. Many models of teaching that can make a reference in teaching. I got knowledge about some of teaching models in PETA class. I learnt four teaching models. There are the lecture discussion model, group interaction model, guided discovery, and the direct instruction model. I learnt about the weaknesses and the strengths. At that time class were divided into some groups, and we discussed it.
            The first is the lecture discussion model. Based on the papers given by my lecture, the lecture discussion model is teaching model that use teaching centered learning to help the students understand organized knowledge. According with what I have read, the teacher in this model began the class by reviewing the last lesson. The teacher gave brief explanation. Then the teacher asked some questions to determine the students working memories and to check their comprehension. And then, the teacher also made diagram to help students organized information. The strength from this model are easy to plan for the teachers, and they can flexible such us make web quest to give instruction. And the weakness based on my opinion, in this model there is just one way communication (teacher-students).
            The second is direct instruction model. In this model instruction come directly from the teacher and teacher provides guidance to students. The strength from this model is the students active to respond the teacher’s questions.
            The third is guided discovery. This model almost same with scaffolding is using step by step. There are five steps, introduction and review, open-ended phase, convergent phase, closure, and application. Based on the papers from my lecture, the strengths in this model are encourages active engagement, promotes motivation, and development creativity and problem solving skills. And then the weaknesses are creation of cognitive overload, and maybe teacher fail to detect problem.
            Finally is group interaction model. There are five essential elements from this model, face to face interaction, group goals, individual accountability, collaborative skills, and group processing.  Based on what I learnt about this model, the strengths are encourage students to speaking based on their thinking, encourage students to sharing each other about their viewpoint, build team spirit, enhance the ability of give opinion, and teach them to respect each other.
            After I learnt about all of teaching models in the above, I believe that we can apply all of teaching model, but we must choose the model which is appropriate with the objective of the lesson. And then, There are no best model, because all equally have the advantages and disadvantages. So, it’s depends to the objective of the lesson and I think depends to the material.

personally I think it really helps teacher candidate to know how to make effective teaching in classroom.. :)

btw, what is your opinion if you have many different type of students in your class,so how do you apply your model instruction?
