Journal Reflection: An Effective Teaching and An Effective Learning

22^nd of November was my first PETA class that we had after having mid semester test. Here we were divided into five groups than every group had to discuss about one topic which was provided by the lecturer. My group and I got ‘An Effective Teaching and Effective Learning’ as the topic to be discussed. Actually this topic ever discussed in the first meeting in previous class but in this occasion we would discuss it intensively.

As the teacher candidates, we should understand about an effective teaching and how to create it in the classroom. Hence, I am going to share you about it here. An effective teaching is a teaching process which can make students  to be effective students. To create it, teachers should understand about models of learning first. There are three kinds of model such us Reception, Construction, and Co-Construction.

a.       Reception

Learning  process here means  that being taught. Teachers transfer their their knowledge to their students.

b.      Construction

Here the students get the knowledge by making constructions through discussion or discovery.

c.       Co-Construction

Students build their knowledge by making construction through interaction and collaboration with others especially thought dialogue.

 By knowing the kind of those models, it can aid them in creating an effective teaching  and learning for the students.

There are 5 Key Behaviors that can encourages an effective teaching. Those are

1.      Lesson Clarity

Teachers should give explain the lesson clearly so students can understand it easily.

2.      Instruction Variety

Teachers suppose to give different instruction based on level of the students. It is because their students have different characteristics.

3.      Teacher Task Orientation

Teachers should consider about classroom time. Hence teacher can manage the class when students should learn and when should students practice.

4.      Engagement in the Learning Process

Teachers should be able to make learners engage in the classroom activity. Hence teachers should provide some interesting activities that can caught students attention.

5.      Students Success Rate

Teachers should understand about their students rate in learning process. Hence the teacher can help students to develop their ability to get successful through working task.

Then there are 10 Qualities of an effective teaching which teachers should consider. Those are

1.      An Engaging Personal and Teaching Style

Teacher should take a part in students’ activities.

2.      Clear Objectives for Lesson

Teacher should make clear objective of their lesson and work to reach their objectives.

3.      Effective Discipline Skill

By having discipline skill so teachers can give the best example for learners than it can help learners to develop their good behaviors.

4.      Good Classroom Management Skill

By having good management skill, it can help teachers to manage students’ behavior in the classroom.

5.      Good communication with parents

Teachers should make communication with parents so they can share and inform them about their children, what is going on the class and also learners’ development in learning process. Then it can through phone, meeting or email.

6.      High Expectations

If teachers have high expectation to their students. If can make them work well to encourage students in reaching their best.

7.      Knowledge of Curriculum and Standards

Teacher should know about school curriculum and have standards of their teaching process. Hence their teaching can work based on the curriculum and also standards that they want.

8.      Knowledge of Subject Matter.

Teachers should have knowledge about the subject matter and incredible knowledge. It can help them to answer the questions of students which are out of our expectation.

9.      Passion for Children and Teaching

Teachers should be passionate in working with students.

10.  Strong Rapport with Students

The great teachers develop and establish relationship with the students.

By understanding those qualities. It can aid us to create an effective teaching someday.

After studying this topic, if I relate to my PETA class. I think the activities that I got in the class was not really effective especially in learning and understanding the whole topics. It was because the jigsaw and the presentation spent much time. Then I could not caught whole the contain of presentation because I had to paid attention and focused on my topic but those activities were nice.

Here I realize that being teacher is not easy. We should learn many thing to encourage our ability. Then I state that this topic is really helpful for me in preparing my self.
