What is the Differentiation?

Tuesday, 22 November 2011. This was the 1st session of Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment with Mrs. Ine after the mid semester test two weeks ago. In this session we talked about differentiation, lesson plan, effective learning, cooperative learning and multiple intelligences. Actually those materials was learned before the mid-term test, but to make sure that students understood about that Mrs. Ine review those materials because it is the basic of teaching learning which should be know by teacher candidate. Well, in this session Mrs. Ine divided us into five groups to do presentation about it and I got the first group which explains about “what is the differentiation?”
Every student has individual backgrounds and needs. As a teacher we should know those differentiate of our students, because it will be give effect in the process teaching and learning in the class. There are many differentiate which should be known by teacher those are Cognitive ability which it was similar with multiple intelligences where everyone has different intelligence each other. As a teacher we should be known as well as about the strength and the weakness of our students. So we knew what we should do if we knew their strength and weakness our student.
After that, as a teacher also should be knew the learning style of students such as where, when and how students obtains and process the information. Moreover, teacher can know the diversity in classrooms by focus on environment and physical circumstances like temperature, sound, light, degree of mobility, and time of day. Then social organization such as working alone, with a partner, or on a team, and then psychological factor like whether a student is reflective, impulsive, or analytic and the last emotional climate such as motivation and degree of structure.
Then socioeconomic and family factor also give effect for the students on their school. As a teacher we cannot assume that all students have similar home environments because every student has different background and home lives. Differentiated instruction does not assume all students are starting at the same level of learning and the same family support. So the student does not feel undifferentiated each other in the classroom.
As a teacher also should be knew about readiness of students to study. The teacher realizes some of students are ready for what are teacher about to teach and readiness to move the next subject. There are many differentiate which should be knew by the teacher such as learning pace, gender, culture and so on.
Well, that is my reflection today. It was comfortable to know what should be known in teaching. I hope after knew what differentiate is, I can be a good teacher in the future who could be understood the students well.
