Well if my readers are academicians, they definitely know what assessment is. If I may say what assessment is in my own words, I would like to say Assessment is kind of process. The process includes measurement, observation and judgment (but it is not supposed to be judgmental). Teacher need to assess students to see the progress of students and also their achievement through learning process. Assessment is not only done for once, but during the class.
I have learn about assessment in Educational Psychology, but it was just a brief. Moreover, I learn it in Language Teaching Methodology and Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment or called as PETA. From the tittle, it has been known that the material will be about assessment. Fortunately, because I get two courses that the material is the same, it makes me easily understand.
I love the way I was taught about assessment in PETA course. By reflecting, the lecturer asked me to tell about what I was feeling when I was assessed in Junior High School and Senior High School. Then, I compared my feeling at the time with my feeling now in SSE. Well, it is so contrast. At first, I just enjoyed what my teacher did to assess me. Having pencil and paper test or oral test was commonly done in my previous school. I only thought that test was the way to measure my understanding through the lesson.
Now, I know what actually assessment is. In fact, assessment is such a complicated thing to do. The reasons are:
1. It should be valid
2. It should be reliable
3. It should be objective
4. It is done through learning process
5. It should consider multiple intelligence
By doing assessment, teacher is not only becomes an educator but also an observer. In assessing, teacher needs another source to get information of the students. There is something called as Triangulation. It is about elements that can be source in assessing students. The elements are student, teacher and family.
In assessing, there are traditional assessment and alternative assessment. The example of traditional assessment is paper and pencil test. For alternative assessment, the examples are portfolio, journal, performance and exhibition. In here, teacher`s ability and sensitivity are really need to conduct appropriate assessment for students. In order, the things that the teacher want to assess are successfully assessed.

Ika, is elements in doing assessment only three? because we may assess their affective based on their peers "judgement"? we also may get some information about them for support our assessment through their accounts in internet such as their blog, fb, and so on.. what do you think about that?

you said that, in assessment we do not make a judgment, is it? What I have known, after we collect the information, we make a judgment based on those data.
just addition, the thing that differentiate assessment and evaluation is just the time, not making judgment or not. Do you have any comment Ika?
