November 23rd, 2011 was the first day I joining PETA class again after two tiring, revolting and distressing weeks which we call as mid-term weeks. At that session, Miss Ine divide us into groups (God, I forgot how many groups there was!) to discuss about different material. Next, she asked us to do a jigsaw, a learning strategy to collect complete information from others.
However, first, let’s go back to the day when all of the third semester students started a war against PETA mid-term monster, a lesson plan making. It was only two questions but for God’s sake, it needed long, structured and ink-wasted answer. Anyway, I think it was not so difficult that I did it very smoothly, easily and confidently. However, let’s see what I will get from my work (hope I get good score, amin).
Back to PETA class again, my group got the effective teacher and effective teaching to discuss. From the paper Miss Ine gave, an effective teaching is the teaching that makes effective learning happen and empowering learners to become effective learners. There are five key behaviors to effective teaching;
1. lesson clarity,
2. instructional variety,
3. teacher task orientation,
4. engagement in the learning process, and
5. student success rate.
There are also five helping behaviors to effective teaching;
1. using student ideas and contributions,
2. structuring,
3. questioning
4. probing, and
5. teacher affect.
That paper also explains the top ten qualities of an effective teacher, there are;
1. an engaging personality and teaching style
2. clear objective for lesson
3. effective discipline skills,
4. good classroom management skill,
5. good communication with parents,
6. high expectations,
7. knowledge of curriculum and standard,
8. knowledge of subject matter,
9. passion for children and teaching, and
10. strong rapport with student

Phew! That many things I should know then I should do to become an effective teacher and do effective teaching. Gotta be strong to make it happen!

Well, I'm wondering what kind of teacher that you think has an engaging personality like what you have mentioned above about top ten qualities of effective teacher?
Thank you, Kris.
