It’s Not Simple Thing
November 29th, 2011 was special day for me. It is no doubt because it became a starting point to study further about assessment. Actually, I have learnt a little bit of assessment’s concept in Educational Psychology subject when I was in the first semester. Unfortunately, at that time my friends and I did not have enough time to discuss it in detail because of the limited time. There were some other activities that we had to do in the rest of semester. Probably that’s why my lecturer, Mrs. Rosa, decided not to discuss about it deeply.
Beside the material that I feel relatively interesting for me, the last meeting was also interesting for me. My friends and I were asked to reflect to our previous teachers’ method in assessing us. Mrs. Ine asked us whether he/ she used variety form of assessment or just strict in the certain method(s). In fact, most of our teacher in the high school did not pay attention with form of assessment. They tended to use conventional methods for assessing us, such as: multiple choice, short answer, true-false statement, etc. It was just little of us who have been assessed by performance, portfolio or other alternative methods.
Knowing this phenomenon, I think it will be our task in the future. We have to be aware of the way we assess our students’ achievement. We need to understand what kind of assessment that suitable to assess particular skill of the students. Before doing that, I think it is important to understand first what assessment actually is. In the simple way, we need much data when we want to do a kind of assessment. It means we can not just rely on a little aspect of students’ skill to assess them. It is different with a test. We just measure a part of students’ skill by doing a test. Hence, test is including assessment.
Finally, I just want to say that it is hard to assess our students’ achievement effectively. We need more knowledge, experience, and awareness. I wish through this subject, especially in this chapter, I can learn and practice how to assess effectively.
