Assessment in Class


In the previous meeting we talked about assessment. In my opinion, assessment should be done during learning process. If I look backwards to my high school experiences, teacher gave much percentage to assess students in test than from students’ learning process. According to my discussion with my friends, test is not fair for students because test doesn’t aware of extraneous variable of students, such as mood, anxiety, situation, condition, etc. If the teacher just assess from the test, it will not fair for them who has great understanding but they are not in good condition during the test. But, it doesn’t mean that test is not appropriate assessment, it still appropriate to apply in class, but the percentage of assessment must be fair for students.
The function of assessment itself is to get information from students and to know their level understanding of the topic. It can help teacher to guide their students to reach their goals. Assessment should be varies in class, but still suitable with the object itself. It can be from assignment, such as portfolio, homework, etc.
From the previous meeting, I’ve known the differentiation between evaluation and assessment. Evaluation is broader than assessment. Assessment is about judging and scoring the students whereas evaluation is to assess the effectiveness from the whole program, curriculum, or technique of teaching and learning process.
Assessment should be reliable, valid, and objective. Reliable means that the outcomes will consistence though the teacher use difference test. Valid means that assessment must suitable with the goals, if the teacher wants to assess students’ speaking skill, the teacher can use assessment from presentation or daily conversation. Objective means that assessment is not based on someone’s feelings, it should cover from all aspects. Rubric can help teachers to be objective in assessment.

Anyway... do you know way for us as future teacher to minimized student's anxiety level when we give test to them? we cannot avoid test right?
I'd like to know your opinion...

in my opinion, the test should be create enjoyable climate, maybe it's better if the teacher doesn't tell that the students are in the test and the test is held through the process of learning, like quiz.
