E-Reflection 1: Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA)

Yes, I Really Want to be a Teacher
It was the first class meeting of Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment. It is lectured by Ms. Ine. In that first class meeting, she said that it was the first class which she taught. I think it is a nightmare for her to have first experience in lecturing with my class. Before starting the lesson she asked one of us to be a class coordinator. She wanted a girl who would be the class coordinator. I am just curious why she asked a girl, because I think a boy will be better. May be it is a good chance for me to tell you my curiousness Ms. Ine, hehhehhehe.
There was some sharing in class. The first sharing was in pair. We were asked to introduce each other and then she would ask one of us to share about partner’s identity. There were just some students who already shared because of limited time. She said that we would continue this sharing in every beginning of class meeting, but I am not really sure of that. She must forget it next time, hehhehhe.
The next sharing was about most like and unlike previous teachers. It really reflected and reminded me about my previous teachers. It was about my teachers who inspire me to be teacher and my teachers who make me frustrated in learning. It made me realized that to be a beloved and success teacher is not easy. May be someone thinks that she or he is already good in teaching, but it does not mean he or she is beloved and success. That sharing was good opening of this lesson. I asked to myself whether I am sure that I want to be a teacher in future.
As Ms. Ine said that it was the first class meeting for her, but the learning activities were same as other lectures. It was not just sitting on the chair and listen to the explanation, but invite us to contribute in some activities. I could not be sleepy anymore, hehheheh.
Before this class, I had already got the Language Teaching Methodology (LTM). I just have a question about this, why should it be divided into two subjects? Why don’t we combine both into e subject? I must be a great combination, because we will get two points in one subject.

Yes, it's my first time lecturing at SSE but is not my first time lecturing as you assumed. Perhaps I didn't make it clear on my introduction. I used to be an English Lecturer at English Department of Universitas PGRI in Kupang for about three years. It's not a nightmare at all teaching in your class. It's fun.

There is only one reason for me to assign a female class captain in my class. To let female students prove that they can also take the leading role. It has always been male students taking the role and I just want something different in my class.

Did I say that we would do the self- introduction every week at the beginning of the class? I don't remember saying that. I think at the time I said that we did not have enough time for everyone to introduce themselves, therefore, we will continue the getting-to-know everyone throughout the next class meetings.

PETA and LTM are two interrelated subjects with different aspects to focus on. The former focuses on different aspects of effective teaching and assessments that can be integrated into all subjects. The latter focuses on teaching methodology on language (English) teaching. I think it is even better for you to have the two subjects separately delivered to dig deeper into the essence of effective teaching and learning to suit your needs viewed from different aspects. You will get more and longer time to refresh the knowledge, skills and ideas you may have already obtained, and at the same time you can also learn and explore new knowledge, skills and ideas from both subjects. Just make use of this privilege.

Be a learning learner. :)
