The second session was more fun than the previous one. We watched a documentary video about thematic learning. We also asked to discuss in which part is effective and which part is ineffective. I did such a great brainstorming with my group.
According to me, thematic teaching is effective to put in the class. It integrated with other lesson and real life. In thematic teaching, teacher is not only teaching one lesson in one period, can be two or three lessons. This integrated learning is one of the effective things. Teacher doesn’t only stick in one lesson. By this, teacher can explore many things that related to the lessons. It can make students develop their critical thinking how can one subject related to others.
Besides, thematic teaching is also give experience to students in real life. For example in the video, teacher gives explanation about Rambutan fruit, and then they go to the real garden of rambutan fruit. That’s kind of effective teaching, make students learn directly from the nature, not only know from the book.
However, if I may give comment to the video, it’s not a good example of effective thematic teaching. It’s a student centered learning, so the class there is so passive. Besides, how teacher assess the students is kind of ineffective thing. She assesses only several students and do not give time to discuss before with their group. The assessment also seems not really covered all the material which has been studied that day. It’s only review not assessment, I suppose. The effective assessment should, at least, make them thinking critically.
Before we ended up the class, we made a lesson plan. It’s confusing, though so, to make an effective lesson plan. But we will discuss it in next meeting. So, see yaa in week three..

So, how to make elementary school students use their critical thinking?
Risma, you are not the one who is confused with making a lesson plan. trust me that many of our friends are still very confused about it.. :)
I agree with you momo, Thematic learning has to be more effective than what we had watched in the video. The effective teaching and effective teacher should happen in that class but, from the video we could get some lesson about what are the effective teaching and effective teacher them self.
very nice posting momo. cheeers
