As longer we learn Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA) as more materials and knowledge we get. Sometime we think whether other higher education learns this. It really prepares us to be effective teachers with effective teaching in the future. In last class meeting, we discussed about learning models. They are direct instruction model, lecture discussion model, group interaction model and guided discovery. Here we will share our understanding of those models.
The first is direct instruction model. Teacher gives explanation and act as a model in learning process. It needs more time because the instruction fully comes from the teacher and sequentially. In this model, there are two possibilities, whether teacher gives good models or not, because it will influence students’ learning.
Lecture discussion model seems like conventional learning in a bit more creative. We state a conventional learning because teacher takes full control in class for delivering the materials. It is also more creative, because teacher does interaction to review prior materials and relates this to current materials. It helps student easier in memorizing.
The next is group interaction model. We ever did this model before. Learning process is held in groups. It was in English Structure subject. Actually there is an advantage of this. The advantage is student will help each other in understanding the lesson. Besides, it can be the disadvantage for good student when one of them has lower competence.
The fourth is guided discovery. It is a bit better than others, because it stimulates interaction with students during learning process and allow student to explore their understanding based on the process in the end of class. In the other hand, it could be a student bias. Students are also given a big opportunity to explore this.
Those are our understanding of learning models of PETA with Ms. Ine in this reflection.
