THEMATIC LEARNING IN OUR VIEWPOINT

In this group reflection, we want to refresh our memory about thematic learning. Based on our viewpoint, thematic learning is sort of an effective method. Before we explain more, we want to write about our self approach of thematic learning in order to get the same understanding between us and the reader. Thematic learning is one of methods of teaching that combine some subjects of study become one. It is also let the students to experience real life of the subject that being learned. Usually this method is used more for student at elementary school whose subjects are no need a deeper understanding.
Based on our discussion, thematic teaching is effective to put in the class. In thematic teaching, teacher can teach two or three lessons in one period.  This integrated learning is one of the effective things. By this, teacher can explore many things that related to the lessons. It can make students develop their critical thinking on how can one subject related to others. On the video, we observe that the teacher was asking a question and giving reward for those who answered correctly. It was effective to elicit the student to be active in class during the lesson.
As we mention above, thematic teaching is also give experience to students in real life. For example in the video, teacher gives explanation about Rambutan fruit, and then they go to the real garden of rambutan fruit. That’s kind of effective teaching, make students learn directly from the nature, not only know from the book.  
I think thematic learning itself is a good innovation of teaching. However, there also many things we don’t agree about the video. She taught the students by directly giving them the information. We are trying to say that the teacher did not do effort to lead the students to find out the knowledge by their self. It will not help them in developing their critical thinking. Moreover, actually the student seemed like so bored and do not do something meaningful. They only continued what the teacher said. That often happens in Indonesia. As the result, mostly the students did not really remember and understand what they had learnt after the class finished.
We reflect to our self that we have to be a professional teacher who not only helps our student know but also able to apply the knowledge into real life. I think teachers’ job is not just teaching. They have a big job that is leading the students to be able to achieve what they wish to be. Teachers do not prepare the student for the examination but they prepare their student for facing the real life in the future. That’s why; this learning is so much give help to students.
