After learning PETA for three weeks with Ms. Ine, we have collected a lot of knowledge which are very useful for us as the teacher candidates. We have learned about what effective teaching is and how to be the effective teachers. We’ve also learned about how to prepare ourselves in giving instructions, and on the recent meeting, we have learned about the models of instruction.
In this first journal reflection of our group, we are going to focus on what we have learned on the third meeting of PETA class, yes, it is models of instruction. There are four models of instruction that we have learned, they are direct instruction, lecture-discussion, guided discovery, and group interaction. Most of the models of instruction not only provide active and fun learning, but also guarantee the effectiveness of learning and teaching process itself. We believe that those models will definitely help the teachers in their learning and teaching process to attain their learning objectives, moreover if they have already comprehended and prepared those models well.
Based on our understanding, direct instruction is like teacher centered learning. The teacher has most control in the classroom. In this method, we see the students as the passive learners who only get a lot of inputs from their teacher.
The next is lecture-discussion. It is the combination between lecturing and discussion. This model is a kind of active learning which helps the students to interact not only with their teacher but also with their friends. So, with this model, the students will not only achieve the content of the material, but they will also find out the personalities of their friends.
The third is guided discovery. It can help the students construct their own understanding by the teacher guidance. The teacher’s role here is to facilitate the learning and teaching process.
The last but not least is group interaction. To the best of our knowledge, this model can bring the students into the discussion atmosphere along the learning process in the classroom. The students can think, pair and share knowledge with their peers in the discussion. Whereas, the teacher will check their understanding after they finish the discussion time.
From those four models of instruction, we are interested in guided discovery to be applied by us later when we become teachers. In our opinion, this model provides more benefits for both teacher and students. For instance, from the teacher’s side, this model can help the teacher easier to teach because in guided discovery teacher only act as the facilitator. The teacher only has to guide the students to get their knowledge and make sure that they attain the learning objectives with less time of lecturing. On the other hand, the students are free to explore knowledge. They are also trained to be able to apply their knowledge into real life situation. The most important thing is that it creates an active learning in the classroom.
Every single thing that we have learned in PETA class is totally valuable and helpful for us as the teacher candidates. The models of instruction that we have talked about above are also considered as very valuable and important. We might have different opinion about what model is best for us to be used later due to each model’s strengths and limitations. Above all, what important is how we can be as creative as possible to use those models effectively and appropriately to help us to be the new generation of effective teachers.
