The latest session in PETA class was a little bit different for me. It was not because I thought that the activities were not fascinating as usual, those were very interesting, though. One of those interesting activities was when Ms. Ine started the class by giving us the task to draw our feeling that day. I was very excited, I love drawing my feeling because I often find it harder to describe it.
Unfortunately, when I was about to draw, I got a phone call from Ms. Windy. She asked me to go out for a while to have a photo shot for SSE marketing. Thus, I asked for Ms. Ine’s permission to leave the classroom for a while, so I skipped some activities as the consequence.
After I finished with the photo shot, I entered the class and found that everyone was busy after drawing something. I had no clue about what they drew, moreover about what I had to draw, so I did not draw anything. Then, I realized that my friends were busy because Ms. Ine asked them to make a circle with some volunteers having a discussion in the middle of the circle. They were discussing about assessment.
After that, Ms. Ine asked us to make a group of four or five to discuss about the drawings and assessment. At first, I could not catch up what they were doing, I even got confused because I had no drawing to be discussed with my friends. This situation really distracted my mind, maybe that was why I felt a little bit different about PETA class that day.
Fortunately, I could get my focus back when we started to discuss about assessment. From that discussion, I found that assessment is different with test. Assessment is an instrument to collect information about students’ such as their knowledge, attainment, learning styles and so on. Teachers can use assessment to improve their teaching way. The students also can use assessment to help them improve their learning by the feedback given by the teacher from the assessment. Thus, I know that test is only a small part from assessment.
After we talked about assessment in general, we discussed about assessment in SSE. In my opinion, so far, assessment in SSE is effective because it often considers about the students’ needs and it often meets the goal for the students as the teacher candidates. Next, we talked about whether assessment in PETA is effective or not. Some of my friends argued about its effectiveness due to the amount and frequency of the assessments given which is the reflective journal. To be honest, I also think the same way at the time because maybe I still do not get used to be overwhelmed by a lot of assessments in the same time since the frequency of the reflective journal task is categorized as pretty often. Fortunately, I try not to keep questioning on it, but just do all the assessments as great as I can because I believe that SSE will not give something bad to its students.
Above all, I hope that someday I can make appropriate assessments for my students that not only can help them to improve their learning and or help me to improve my teaching, but also can make us feel enjoyable and not to be objected by doing the assessments. I hope PETA and the other subjects that my friends and I learn in SSE can help us to prepare ourselves more to be great teachers someday. J
